Alina Vadera’s story is inspiring for all the right reasons. Surrounded by art and design as a child, Alina comes with a design vocabulary that has been moulded and honed by her education at Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Interior Architecture as well as Architectural Association where she undertook a short summer program. She worked with ZF Design in Istanbul, Vudafieru & Saverino in Milan, and thereafter did a short stint at Interiors with Art in London.
After spending a decade away from Indian shores, Alina decided to return to her homeland to further refine her voice as a decorator. She then explored the realm of hospitality and designing residential projects by working for Studio Lotus for slightly over two years. While at Lotus, her accent influenced the design of the Ogaan Flagship Store in Hauz Khas Village, The Coast Cafe at Khan Market, The Gaurav Gupta Store, Pan Asian bistro in Chandigarh called Plum and a residence in New Delhi. After all that, Alina was driven towards initiating her own design practice and founded Ava Studio.
Slightly over a year old, the studio is about creating evocative spaces through a narrative that is driven by ‘functionality, clever creative solutions and aesthetics.’ The studio explores the realm of architecture from individual spaces to retail and hospitality, as well as creating furniture and lighting fixtures for each project. ‘I believe a successful project is when the concept of the space is presented or experienced by the user in a conscious or sub-conscious manner. We hope to gain experience by working for challenging products that are recognized for their innovative design and sustainability.’
Alina recently collaborated with Headlight Design Studio and created a space for chef and restaurateur Marut Sikka called The Delhi Clubhouse. The club invokes a sense of nostalgia; comfortable, casual yet polished with an Indian contemporary twist. ‘We conceptualized a space that resembled an adda, somewhat like the Delhi Gymkhana Club or the Delhi Golf Club,’ explains Alina. ‘Using this concept as a guiding principle, we translated the ideas into terrazzo chequered flooring, dark wood panels, tennis-green paint, brass trim accents and leather upholstery as design elements.’
Coming up this year is a collaborative with Headlight Design called Ava + HD. Under this partnership, they will design their next branch in Gurgaon, two stores for Shantanu and Nikhil’s menswear label in Kolkata and Mumbai, a retail space for High Note Performance—a one-stop shop for motorcycle enthusiasts, and two penthouses in Gurgaon.
