Fashion Designer

Growing up amid dressmakers, Tania’s love affair with design bloomed in her hometown Goa. ‘All the women in my family loved to sew—right from our petticoats to Christmas and birthday dresses. My aunt was a well-known wedding dress tailor in Madras and I spent days in her tailoring studio, observing her.’ Armed with a fine art degree from Goa College of Art, Tania moved to Bombay for work right after college. Following a few fruitless gigs in the city, she found herself working as the chief stylist with Elle magazine.

And sometime later, Mogachea was born with love and care for her town. The label is about working from the scratch with local weavers and block printing artisans, no matter how slow the process may be. Tania travelled to Ahmedabad to learn natural dyeing techniques and to Secunderabad in search of weavers producing soft Malkha fabric. Her label stands strongly for restoring sustainable practices. Everything is intensively made by hand—right from water-colouring her own prints, creating crochet flowers, hand-dyeing and hand-weaving fabrics to printing labels. Spawning a mix of khadi, malkha and organic cotton, every garment has a story to tell.

Tania is currently working on a new line with pure wool and yarn in natural dyes, aside from travel, a few pop-ups and steady expansion. Mogachea’s story is aptly reflected in their look book shot by Sheetal Mallar, evoking a sense of effortless serenity. ‘I hope to weave beautiful stories with every collection; every shoot we do will be a mini project, portraying Goa and its emancipating beauty and not just beaches and beer,’ says Tania.
