Joyce Carol Oates’ novel Blonde, based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, propelled the making of a film, of the same name, that received immense acclaim at the Venice FIlm Festival this year. As the film will soon begin streaming on Netflix, we’ve put together a list of other film, adapted from the written work of Joyce Carol Oates’, that should be on your must watch list, and maybe your must read list, as well.
Smooth Talk
Adapted from Oates’ short story, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, the film follows Laura Dern as a free-spirited 15-year-old girl, who flirts with a dangerous stranger in the Northern California suburbs and must prepare herself for the frightening and traumatic consequences.
Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang by Joyce Carol Oates led to the making of this film, with Angelina Jolie playing Legs Sadovsky, who gets four other high school girls to think for themselves and react to a teacher's sexual harassment, which gets them suspended. They bond, and rebel, at an abandoned house, and eventually form a gang called Foxfire.

Vengeance: A Love Story
Based upon Oates’ novel Rape: A Love Story, Vengeance: A Love Story, stars Nicolas Cage. The film follows a policeman investigating a single mother's rape, who soon takes matters into his own hands after the attackers are acquitted in court.
Double Lover
Freely adapted from the novel Lives of the Twins, the French film follows a fragile young woman named Chloé, who falls in love with her psychoanalyst, Paul. A few months later she moves in with him, but soon discovers that her lover is concealing a part of his identity. The film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition section at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
We Were the Mulvaneys
Based on the novel by the same name, We Were the Mulvaneys is a sensitive portrayal of one family's journey as they face conflict, fear, tragedy and ultimately, themselves. The film was nominated for three Emmys.
