Growing up in India, many of us were influenced by more than just cartoons and cinema; we were also shaped by jingles. The iconic TV ads of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s felt like warm, mini-stories integrated into our daily lives. They advertised everything from chocolates to scooters, but they impacted our childhoods in ways that went beyond just selling products. We hummed their catchy tunes on the playground and mimicked the characters at home. Each commercial was a bite-sized tale—joyful, sincere, and often musical—that became etched in our memories like a favourite melody.
Even today, just a hint of those jingles or a familiar scene can transport us back in time. By celebrating these classics, we are celebrating the shared childhood experiences—those moments of simpler times when an ad could make us laugh, sing along, or even feel teary-eyed, all in under a minute.
Dhara Jalebi Wala (1996)
This ad captured the innocence of childhood like nothing else. A young boy runs away from home, only to be brought back with the promise of hot jalebis — a simple yet powerful reminder of home and love. The line "Jalebi?" uttered by the concerned family friend became legendary. It was heartwarming, nostalgic, and quietly emotional in its storytelling, and remains one of the most loved Indian ads of all time.
Hero Honda Desh Ki Dhadkan (2000)
Hero Honda’s Desh Ki Dhadkan wasn’t just a catchy slogan, it was a declaration. Set to powerful visuals of everyday Indians — from farmers to college students — riding through city streets and village roads, the ad spoke to a generation in motion. It presented the motorbike not just as a vehicle, but as a companion to the dreams and journeys of Indians. The ad’s music, direction, and sheer diversity made it unforgettable.
Cadbury Dairy Milk – Kya Swaad Hai Zindagi Mein (1994)
This iconic commercial broke many conventions. A woman runs onto a cricket field, dancing with abandon after a dramatic win, Cadbury chocolate in hand. It challenged stereotypes and redefined joy. The jingle "Kya swaad hai zindagi mein" captured a simple, liberating celebration of life — and chocolate. Even today, it represents unfiltered happiness and is often cited as one of the best ads ever made in India.
Hamara Bajaj (1989)
One of the earliest brand anthems that hit the right chord, Hamara Bajaj gave voice to middle-class India. More than selling scooters, it sold pride — the pride of owning something reliable, made for and by Indians. From bustling cities to quiet towns, the ad showed how Bajaj was a part of everyday life. The jingle still evokes emotions of a simpler, more hopeful India.
Fevicol – Joint Family Bus Ad (2008)
A packed, overloaded bus trudging through a village road, with people hanging on, chickens clucking, and luggage piled high. Somehow, the bus doesn’t break apart. Why? Because it’s held together by Fevicol. This ad was witty, sharp, and full of classic Indian humour. It told a culturally rooted story while subtly selling the brand’s product strength, and did so without ever losing its smile.
Pepsi – Yehi Hai Right Choice, Baby! (1990s)
With its urban flair, catchy phrase, and youth-oriented energy, Pepsi’s iconic campaign changed the game for cola advertising in India. Aamir Khan’s charm and the confident slogan made it a pop culture phenomenon. Kids repeated the lines, and the ad helped turn Pepsi into the ‘cool drink’ of a new generation.
Nirma – Washing Powder Nirma Jingle
Bright visuals of women tackling tough stains with ease, and that unforgettable jingle — a truly unforgettable ad. Through this, Nirma didn’t just sell detergent; it sold empowerment, cheer, and community. The brand’s tune still plays in the minds of everyone like a comforting refrain.
