A Clay Story

Ceramic Art Studios

In a world brimming with mass-produced commodities, there's an unbridled magic that comes alive when artistry meets craftsmanship. The delicate dance of hands moulding clay into unique shapes, the fusion of inspiration and technique, and the stories woven into each piece make the realm of ceramics a captivating tapestry of creativity. As each piece holds its own unique charm, immune to being replicated, ceramic art is thriving as an intentional, bespoke craft.

In these five distinctive ceramic studios, the hands of artisans breathe life into clay, turning it into functional pieces of art that transcend mere utility.

Lacuna Studio
Tanushree Singh, the face behind Lacuna Studio, began her journey with ceramic art inadvertently in 2018. And now, this happy accident has garnered much love from people all over the subcontinent for being whimsically one-of-a-kind. Seeking to succinctly translate her natural world into her work, Tanushree’s artistic endeavours lead to imagery often drawn from her relationship with water. In her own words, ‘she finds inspiration in the organic intricacies of natural forms and through the exploration of her own mindscape and the nuances of human experiences.’ Experimenting with shapes and textures, Tanushree is always found expanding the bounds of her craft. Mesmerisingly detailed and calmingly coloured, her ceramic pieces - be they creative flower holders, wall art, or functional mugs and jars - are a visual treat. The hues of blue overlay the oceanic motifs beautifully. “Driven by a fierce passion for experimentation and a desire to express herself through clay creations that capture the legacy of her emotions merged with the raw beauty of nature”, Lacuna Studio, based in Goa, is a homegrown shop that tops our list of ceramic art studios that never cease to amaze, inspire, and excite.

A Clay Story
Elevating the everyday, A Clay Story, founded by Anumita Jain creates ceramics that serve as functional pieces of the household with a particularly rustic charm. Following her numerous creative stints every summer as a child, Anumita was finally drawn to product design. Lovingly handcrafted, A Clay Story celebrates the inaccuracies and imperfections of our everyday life through their creations. Having a knack for extracting beauty from within the mundane, the ceramic decor, tableware, candles, and more somehow soften spaces to bring a certain grace to them. Rooted in ‘earthy tones, understated palettes, and organic shapes’, A Clay Story successfully delivers an unassuming comfort to every home.

Jayati Mehta Ceramics
From the foothills of the Himalayas, Jayati Mehta creates ceramics that resonate with simple and artisanal living. ‘Bound together by a contrast between glazed and unglazed raw clay surfaces’, Jayati’s work evokes natural imagery set against timeless tones and a unique finish. What speaks to us most about these pieces is that these motifs, taken from and inspired by the natural world, are hand-painted or stamped on wet clay, imbibing them with living character. In her creative journey, she even uses wooden block prints on clay to create bespoke platters, bowls, mugs, planters, and more. The textural play transforms the functional and wonted into exquisite pieces of baked earth to be cherished. Bringing her works home is a definite way to curate a space that feels warm and inviting.
