A slice of lemon to make the day less shitty

The Designer
I'm a graphic designer and a visual artist based out of Mumbai India, currently exploring the vast array of things that interest me in the space of art, design, music, events and so much more! I come from an army background, which has really made me appreciate networking and interacting with new people from all walks of life. Hence, I absolutely love spending most of my time outside the house. The arts had been my keen interest since childhood — from scribbling around to crafts glass paintings, jute work, pottery and a lot more. Of course this was only about the art side of it, I honestly had very little or almost no understanding about the big world of design that existed out there. I was familiar with my inclination to creative things, but it wasn't until my 12th grade boards that I decided to take it up as a career.

The Practice
Most of the work that I have put out this year, during the quarantine, was fuelled by the amount of time we suddenly had to ourselves to explore all that we've wanted to. The lockdown did put a big pause on the world, but in my case, it also opened up a lot of doors and pushed me to finally get on to all the things I had been contemplating about for years. It instilled a very strong urge to create as I wish to, to try out new styles, colour palettes and push myself as an artist. And so I created, experimented everyday and thoroughly enjoyed the whole process, thus making it the one thing that I really looked forward to at the end of the day during the odd days.

The Process
My creative process involves a lot of extensive research, sourcing, overthinking, contemplating, and trial and error. As a designer I think I still have tons to explore and learn. I really look forward to doing so in the coming months, and eventually being able to establish my own process that is cohesive and unique.

My process for digital artworks on the other hand is very impulsive, abstract and heavily influenced by surrealism, bringing together elements from nature and human features. I absolutely love spending my time scrolling through stock images on the internet and recreating new compositions from the same. Just the idea of simply taking an image and turning it into a whole new piece of art, with a different narrative, is something that is really fascinating to me and brings to the table a wide range of possibilities, visually.

To The Viewer
My aesthetic as of today is very abstract, surreal and intriguing, the kind that would make a person want to stop and ponder upon what it is they’re looking at. I often like to add to my pieces a very strange, unexpected element that also completes it as a whole. In most of my artworks, I try keeping an open mind without having any sort of final visual in my head, and sort of work my way on it step by step, giving me a lot more headspace to experiment and test out what actually works and what doesn’t. It’s a super fun process and most of the time some mistakes really work out in my favour.

My biggest takeaway while creating is to not force any certain thought or expect a certain design. I think it’s important to open up your mind to all the possibilities, and then fine tune them as per your requirements. And most importantly, to go completely wild with it, and trust and enjoy the process as you work your way to the end. It’s so wonderful that every individual has their own unique way of communicating with the world at large, and it is entirely up to us to find out how we can do it best and make it ours.

The Future
The lockdown was full of good days and bad days, but it brought in a lot of positive changes and really gave me the time to work on myself and put myself out there as a creator. During the lockdown we all had our personal hurdles that we were trying to overcome to the best of our potential, and grow in every way we can. I’m really glad that we had the opportunity to experience this, overcome it and better ourselves as individuals.

I had been working very closely with the music agency KRUNK for the past year, taking away the best of experiences and memories, which I am so grateful for. During my tenure there I interacted with so many artists and independent creators, who really inspired me with their work and approach to life. As of now, I am freelancing as a graphic designer, working on different projects and learning something new every now and then, while honing my skills. This year has brought a lot of interesting projects like branding, album artworks and more! Currently I’m working with a close friend on building her brand called Sazo, which is really eccentric and super cool!

In the near future I hope to build up on my skills in the space of branding and packaging, and simply to just keep creating and working on some wicked collaborations with designers all around! There are so many things that I wish to do in the coming years and I’m really looking forward to crossing them off my list one by one.
