Rhycni

Launched by siblings Nikita and Raveena Galani, who are poles apart in their nature but have a similar vision, label Rhycni is an amalgamation of distinct ideas. While Raveena’s experience at Chanel’s Lesage Studio in Paris lends the label its attention to detail, Nikita’s lack of experience in fashion bestows it with just the right amount of kookiness. The sisters begin at the same point, with their deconstructed, earthy toned silhouettes, but always end up reaching different places because of their individual perspectives. Unable to describe their ideas verbatim, they’re confident of what they want and are willing to work hard to achieve it. They talk about the label, their process and more down below.

The Label
Rhycni means nothing. It does not make any sense, the word or the pronunciation. We’re the same. We do not make any sense but we’re here to make you feel something. Something that you’ll either hate or love. Never in between. So soft and sexy, but so rough and bulky. We do not like safety, we do not like practicality, we do not like limits. We won’t promise you comfort, but we’re definitely giving you a piece of art. Art that a lot of people might not relate to and only a handful will appreciate.

The Process
It is all super organic and old school for us. We need our pen and paper, and a lot of cutting and pasting, for our brains to start working and visualising everything. You enter our space and you’ll see the walls flooded with our inspiration, which comes naturally to us. You could lock us in a room with whatever it is you want, and we’ll come out inspired!

We start with the basic samples and end up layering everything in a way a normal brain wouldn’t, and voila, we end up with some magical pieces. Our roughest initial samples usually end up becoming our favourites, because of how imperfect and raw and worked upon they are. We start from something and reach somewhere entirely different by the end of it, and that’s the whole beauty of creating.

The Fashion of Now
We don’t think fashion “should” look a certain way at any point. It doesn’t have to look like anything but everything at the same time. It needs to be whatever you want it to look like. Honestly, the chaos of not knowing is the best part. I think with the direction we’re heading in, it’s about gender fluid clothing right now. Then there’s virtual fashion, like NFT’s, that we definitely want to explore more and really dive into sometime in the near future.

Eventually, it doesn’t matter what fashion looks like and what’s trending or not. At the end of the day, whatever makes you feel like your best self is what fashion should look like.

The Pandemic and Beyond
We’re doing everything exactly the same way we would’ve two years ago. The pandemic made a lot of karigars move back to their hometowns and villages. To get them back here with assured security was challenging, given that we haven’t even launched yet. With the kind of ideas we’re working on, we need some major manpower and people who specialise in a lot of different aspects. Our confidence in the brand is definitely helping us get a lot of these creative souls back to the bay.
