SHailesh B.R. : Notes To Self
Editorial
June 2020
When I first began writing my editorial, it read very differently. By the time it was ready to be filed in, the world had changed. Somewhere in the midst of all the concern and chaos, my priorities had changed. My mind was torn between celebrating our anniversary (Platform turned fifteen this year) and reflecting on the unsettling situation the pandemic had brought in. I decided to shelf my original editorial, and share what I have learnt about creativity during these past few months.I have always been an avid reader, have been extremely intrigued by art, I love the movies, have a fascination for design and I begin and end my day with music. During the lockdown, none of this has changed. Instead, it made me realise that creativity is far more resilient than we can imagine. At the end of the day, art in all its avatars survives.
The Arts, more than ever before, has become our lifeline. This issue celebrates that.
An exclusive with the inimitable British photographer, Martin Parr gives us an insight into his deft craft. We go down memory lane as he talks about the lives and scenes he has documented and the stories he has told through his lens for over the past three decades. Book-builder and photographer, Dayanita Singh, began her career photographing the unparalleled maestro, Ustaad Zakir Hussain. Forty years later, those same images come alive in a book that Dayanita built. A Suitable Boy, written by Vikram Seth, nearly two decades ago, finds its story being told through moving pictures by the supremely talented director, Mira Nair. King of Couture, Tarun Tahiliani, in the business for the last twenty five years continues to refer to a book that was gifted to him, at the very beginning of his sojourn into fashion, by the late Martand Singh in 1987.
This has made me realise that not only can art never be pinned to the ground, it is also immortal, omnipresent and omnipotent. It is dynamic and steps forward have been introduced so we are not bereft of it even when the world has seemingly stopped moving. A creative mind will imagine, be inspired and create, no matter what the circumstances may be. A responsible mind will find solutions. A conscious mind will share and spread knowledge. We are living in a time where none of us anticipated the uncertainty of what the ‘new normal’ may be. However, I hope the understanding of today, of being at home and having the time to pause for a moment, reflect and appreciate, will make us add our vertical line to all the negatives surrounding us, to make it positive. Each of us possesses that power. Be safe. Be strong. Be responsible.
