Rather than treating the house as a conventional gallery, Material Matters uses its rooms, architecture and domestic character as an active part of the exhibition. Photography, textile, fibre arts, design objects, architecture, word art, and ceramic works will sit alongside one another, allowing materials, ideas and practices to move across disciplines.

The exhibition takes its starting point from a simple proposition: an artistic idea is not bound to the material in which it first appears. A thought that begins in ceramic can find expression in fibre; a form imagined in metal can take shape in wood. Across the eight rooms, works are brought into conversation through associations of material, process, form and feeling rather than being confined to rigid disciplinary categories.

A House Not A Gallery
At the centre of Material Matters is the idea of accessibility; of making art feel encountered rather than exhibited at a distance. The exhibition grew, in part, from an open call that received close to 100 submissions, bringing emerging practitioners and BFA students into dialogue with established and lifelong makers. 'This generation doesn't need a gatekeeper, it needs a door, says Gujral. That same instinct shaped the exhibition's design. The House becomes less a neutral backdrop and more a space to wander through, with works encountered within the intimate scale and atmosphere of a home.

A Marketplace of Ideas and Objects
Material Matters sits deliberately at the intersection of art, craft, design and commerce. All works presented in the exhibition will be available for acquisition, creating a direct relationship between artists, makers, collectors and audiences. Importantly, the exhibition also connects acquisition with support for craft communities. A portion of proceeds will benefit Khamir, a craft resource centre based in Kachchh, Gujarat, extending the exhibition's engagement with material culture beyond the walls of Gujral House.

Eight Rooms, Many Ways of Making
Across eight rooms, Material Matters brings together different material worlds and artistic practices, creating a journey through the house that moves between the tactile, the conceptual and the everyday. The exhibition asks visitors to look beyond the distinction between art, craft and design, and instead consider what happens when materials, makers and ideas meet in the same room.'

Material Matters is on view from 1st-30th November, 2026, at Gujral House, New Delhi.
