Nipen Bhuyan

Deeply influenced by his hometown in Arunachal Pradesh, Nipen Bhuyan is a visual storyteller. Drawing on experience and observation, Nipen loves character design, book covers and posters. As much as he invests his time in bespoke gigs, Nipen’s personal body of work is like an everyday practice. His Instagram handle is like a visual diary — a lazy winter walk with the pup, dog taking over the grandad’s rocking chair, monsoon cheer, a boy chasing a tyre with his dog and a stick, among other stories.

Beginnings
I belong to Arunachal Pradesh. Since I was always surrounded by nature, it had a deep influence on me. My bachelors and masters were done from Assam and as far as I can remember, I always aspired to be an artist. From my childhood, I was interested in drawing things that I observed around me.

Influences
The natural beauty of Arunachal Pradesh was of course a major influence. I observed and absorbed a lot from my surroundings.  I enjoy watching people and their everyday activities. I am blessed to belong to a country that is so vibrant. I don't have to look too far for inspiration. That has influenced my art and my sensibility.

On Creativity
Creativity is a form of self-expression of course. It can be extremely satisfying if, through our creativity, we can touch others emotionally. I see some wonderful campaigns and artworks that inspire me and tell me that I have a lot to learn.

A day in the Studio
I start my day early by beginning work on the ongoing projects. I am mostly focused on the work to be done and avoid distractions.

Memorable Projects
There have been quite a few interesting projects. The one I recall right away is what I did recently for a book on the holocaust. The subject was dark, and I had to do a lot of research. It was very challenging, but the client was amazing, and the outcome was satisfactory.

Challenges
Some of the clients are always positive and happy with whatever you do, and that is of course a very pleasant experience. Some, who are slightly critical or like giving their inputs, are also fine. I do like to let them know if I disagree with an edit and more often than not, they go along with my advice. You have to be open to criticism or feedback since there is always room for improvement. The interactions and feedback from the client, the inputs from my colleagues, have all helped in my growth.
