Established in 2018, at Kritika Murarka, modern ethical clothing, encapsulated in a global appeal, is at the forefront. They are a nichè luxury prèt wear brand that specializes in unconventional hand prints, textures, weaves and embroideries. Their garments are fresh and contemporary in nature, which is largely inspired by rich art and culture from all across the world.
After completing her fashion course from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kritika worked for 2 years as a Sample Developer and Fashion Merchandiser for European designers at a leading fashion export house in Kolkata, after which she started her own label. The brand's aesthetics are largely shaped by the designer's strong Indian roots and her modern outlook.
Terravive, Kritika Murarka’s collection that debuted at Lakmé Fashion Week, is an ode to the Earth, its strength, care, and ability to foster. She drew from her roots across Bengal, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, and crafted silk and cotton pieces imbued with striking patterns, stripes, checks and hand drawn prints. We’re in conversation with the founder about what it means to transform tradition into contemporary glamour.
Design Philosophy
I always had a deep instinct and passion for fashion, and I knew early on that I wanted to build something of my own around it. That’s how my journey with Kritika Murarka began. My design philosophy revolves around emotion and storytelling. Each collection reflects a phase of life, a feeling, or a transformation I’ve experienced.
Terravive
Terravive draws inspiration from the intricate artistry of Mata Ortiz, translating its geometric motifs and earthy patterns into contemporary textiles that reimagines heritage craft in modern silhouettes. Crafted in Bengal handloom silks, khadi, linen and cotton, the collection features a dialogue between hand-drawn prints and bold stripes and checks. Hand embroidery techniques like katha, handmade crochet fabrics, corded threadwork, French knots and handmade tassels are an intricate part of the creative process. A palette of terracotta red, ivory, black and green mirrors the Earth’s natural pigments. The collection plays with layering skirts over pants and sarees, dresses with tailored separates creating a versatile statement look. The pieces celebrate slow fashion and Indian craftsmanship while narrating stories of tradition transformed into contemporary glamour.
Colour Palette
Red, black, grey olive—these colours are the natural pigments of the Earth that mirror strength, grounding, and introspection, which is why I chose them. They embody both calm and chaos, just like the earth itself.
A Focus on Indian Craftsmanship
Our brand works intimately with artisans across India to keep our traditions alive. Handloom weavers in Bengal for khadi, Kutch artisans for ajrakh and batik prints, Benarasi weavers for jacquards, Bengal artisans for intricate kantha embroideries, crochet and hand screen printers, who bring our textiles to life. Each creation is a dialogue between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design sensibilities, preserving heritage while keeping it relevant to today’s world.
Sustainability and The Future
For us, sustainability lies in mindful production, responsible sourcing, fair wages and timeless design that outlives trends. When someone wears my clothes, I want them to feel confident, powerful, and connected to themselves and to the story the garment tells. I want to keep evolving creatively, exploring new materials, sustainable techniques, and narratives that push the boundaries of prêt wear.
