November 2023

The first time I met Raqib Shaw was in the winter of 2022 instantly I was drawn into his fascinating world that was so layered just as his masterpieces are. One meeting was not enough,  so I returned to his studio in the summer, where we sat amidst his bonsai garden over a very British style high-tea, to hear him weave more stories about his intriguing life and the making of himself as an artist.

Tarun Tahiliani, a master of his craft and someone I have known for the past twenty years, is equally bewitching, his craft, vision and honesty boldly exuds in his art. To celebrate his thirty years, we share excerpts from his coffee table book that chronicle his journey. Prolific writers in the booka- zine share their thoughts behind writing a sequel, Anuja Chauhan with her building on her charac- ter, ACP Bhavani Singh and writing for the screen and Anita Nair, who knew she couldn’t let Inspec- tor Gowda go just yet, crafted his growth and pro- gression. Amitava Kumar’s first journal came out of keeping creativity alive during the pandemic and the sequel organically followed, recording many of his travels. The stories of these three authors and their creations grace our pages.

To add to the cultural landscape of Mumbai, four art patrons create and curate Mumbai’s first art fair, Art Mumbai and Filmmaker & Producer Karan Kapadia takes us through his journey on a filmset, his newest release Big Girls Don’t Cry, the first show under his production company, Mangata Films. The very talented Suryakant Sawhney also known as Li- fafa, and Miya from Miya Biwi Production adds to the artistry of Platform shares his evolution as a musician and the inspiration behind his album Jaa- go. In an extremely quiet yet beautiful photo essay, photographer Sheetal Mallar documents the women in her family and the role they play in shaping each others’ lives. To celebrate sixty years of Chemould Prescott Road, one of the most celebrated galler- ies in India, Shireen Gandhy takes us down memory lane and shares her interactions with the art world, while artist Orijit Sen makes us pause as he shares a page from The Narmada Diaries.

Visual narratives, Storytellers, merges art with fashion. Four of Hearts celebrates Gucci and the way forward. WYS shines the spotlight on new faces and new voices that have a story to tell and debutants ring in new pages through their incredi- ble experiences, all curated in a bookazine that cel- ebrates art, artistry, creativity and breathes life into the tales people have to tell.

Happy reading and a Happy New Year!
