2026 is already looking phenomenal for the world of cinema, with the release of Wuthering Heights and Marty Supreme, it seems like the art of movie-watching in the theatres is here to stay. More specifically, the year ahead is brimming bright with a return to many familiar worlds. From Dune to Spider Man, upcoming months are sure to promise sequels that come with excitement and a tinge of familiarity. Here is Platform’s edit of the most awaited sequels of the year.
Dune: Part Three
The final conclusion film in this much-awaited space-opera trilogy is set to release on December 18th. The movie is said to pick up roughly 12 years after the events of the previous edition Dune: Part Two.
Devil Wears Prada 2
Miranda Priestly walks the offices of Runway once again, as she competes against her former assistant Emily, played by Emily Blunt. Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway reunite on screen for a funny, real, and emotional portrayal of magazine life on 1st May.
Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special
Although not technically a sequel, Disney and Miley Cyrus have confirmed the return of Hannah Montana through a special twenty year celebratory film, set to premiere on March 24th, exactly two decades after the release of the original show that shaped many teen-hoods.
Toy Story 5
Woody and his gang are headed back to the big screen on 19th June, asking a surprisingly emotional question: what happens to toys when imagination begins to compete with screens for attention?
Avengers: Doomsday
The Marvel Cinematic Universe cannot seem to let the Avengers go, as a result of which the team will band together in Avengers: Doomsday, releasing on 18th December. The villain in this edition is Doctor Doom, whom the film is named after, and will necessitate the contributions of heroes, both old and new.
Minions and Monsters
These loud, chaotic and lovable creatures reunite to go on a Hollywood journey to find frightening creatures to star in a monster movie. The film is expected to release on 1st July.
Jumanji 4
Without a confirmed title as of yet, Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart step back into the unpredictable game once again, expanding its world while holding onto its classic humour in new, unpredictable ways. It will hit screens on Christmas.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Tom Holland and Zendaya’s characters navigate the emotional reset of No Way Home, grappling with anonymity, independence, and responsibility. The film is also rumoured to feature Sadie Sink [of Stranger Things fame], and will come out on 31st July.
Dhurandhar 2
After the giant box office success of Dhurandhar, fans do not have to wait long until Hamza Ali’s pursuit of the Pakistani crime system returns to the screen. The second installment will be released on 19th March.
Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come
After surviving an all-out attack from the Le Domas family, the chaos does not leave Grace [the protagonist] alone. This sequel expands the bizarre family mythology, promising more chaos, satire, and rituals that are likely even stranger. It will make its way to theatres on 3rd April.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
Marking a major novel-to-film adaptation, the story of this installment is set around two decades prior to Katniss Everdeen’s world. The prequel is set to display the Games at their most excessive, and debuts on 20th November.
