Established in 1920 in the carpet belt of Mirzapur, Obeetee is one of India’s oldest and largest luxury rug makers. With a heritage spanning more than a century, the brand brings forth a new collection designed in collaboration with food and design curator Eeshaan Kashyap. The collection draws from the visual grandeur of Ottoman textiles while speaking fluently to contemporary Indian homes.
For Eeshan, the designs are an exploration of continuity–being inspired by the past, working in the present, and creating heirlooms for the future. 'It feels like a time loop,' he explains. 'Contemporary motifs are brought to life using time-honoured techniques, creating pieces that feel familiar yet entirely new.' The result is a body of work that does not replicate history but reinterprets it, allowing old styles to be rediscovered through a renewed, modern lens.
At the heart of the collection are hand-tufted rugs that reimagine motifs once found on royal silk velvets. Abstract mirrored forms, historically associated with opulence and symmetry, are translated into bold, contemporary compositions. Rich reds, glowing yellows, deep sapphires, indigos and muted golds explore the expressive potential of colour and sheen, echoing the magnificence of Ottoman palaces, tents and ceremonial robes while remaining relevant in present-day design sensibilities.
The collection reveals itself through a series of motif-led designs that travel across time and geography. The all-wool Crescent Solar Rug draws on age-old emblems of sovereignty and celestial force, its sweeping arcs rendered with a distinctly contemporary hand. The Chintamani hand-tufted wool rug centres a storied motif historically linked to power, protection and spirituality, once woven into the garments of emperors and courtiers. It is reinterpreted to retain its layered symbolism while settling effortlessly into modern spaces. Completing the narrative is the Stair-Wave hand-tufted wool rug, an abstract composition where rising waves create a sense of rhythm and ascent, evoking movement, elevation and a contemplative transcendence.
Obeetee is known for its century-old commitment to craft and cultural preservation and this collection sits organically with that sentiment. 'It is empowering to witness the commitment to preserving Indian culture, and Obeetee has excelled in this regard,' says Angelique Dhama, President, Obeetee Pvt. Ltd., reflecting on the brand’s 106-year journey. She adds that collections like Now-Stalgia are 'stories woven into each thread,' reinforcing Obeetee’s role as both custodian and innovator of textile heritage.
Over the last century, Obeetee has become a symbol of cultural pride, working with over 25,000 artisans and operating thousands of looms in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh. As the brand enters its next chapter with the launch of Obeetee Carpets and Home in 2025, Now-Stalgia stands as a reminder that legacy is not about standing still, but about carrying history forward with intention.
