Or, of a whiz kid in Mathematics being goaded by family to pursue a career in Medicine, whilst his heart (and soul) was squarely set on Design? A classic rags to riches story, it is Sabyasachi’s touching human qualities and his embrace of the entire spectrum of the senses that establishes his unique identity! Equally at home on a sidewalk in Calcutta and at George V in Paris, in the 27 years that we have known him as a very dear friend, nothing has touched or changed the quintessential Sabyasachi! A simple Bengali meal has often been bliss for him, a good engaging conversation is utterly sensual for him and the richness of India’s heritage in its various hues sends him into a tizzy. His grandmother’s remorse at her grandson becoming a tailor has now metamorphosed into Sabyasachi doggedly remaining true to his uniqueness, inspiring an entirely new crop of designers countrywide.
