Vidya Vinnakota

3D designer Vidya Vinnakota has been a part of the animation industry since the past four years. As someone who finds solace in fictional characters, she uses design as a means to build narratives that she wishes to share with the world. In a bid to represent her culture and the modern south asian woman, Vidya developed her highly popular Crypto Rani series. Below, the designer tells us all about her practice and process:

THE PRACTICE
I work with topics that don’t get the attention they need. My work is centred mainly around cultural and gender themes to raise awareness about women’s rights and representation, and promote inclusivity in the digital art space.

THE PROCESS
I am constantly inspired by everything around me. The city I live in, architecture, many artists all over the world, especially women, and definitely my culture. My creative process is about figuring out what I want to see in the art world and making it happen through my lens. I start off with a 2D sketch outlining my ideas and then take those into 3D almost immediately to realise the concept. Then I go back and forth with the design/composition until I am happy with the final look.

THE VOICE
As a south asian, female designer, I am immediately not a very common voice in the industry. I love the play of bright textures and influences from traditional saree textiles, mixed with a well-balanced composition. The best part about art is that certain pieces just connect with you. They bring you a certain emotion or make you remember something. Even if some people connect with my work, that means a lot to me.

THE FUTURE
I am so excited for this year 2022. I am working on a new project, as well as more of my own art. I am also hoping to do plenty of collaborations once I have a bit more time! I have been overwhelmed with work this last month but it’s because there’s so much I want to do. The NFT space is a really exciting opportunity for me. I have met so many artists I otherwise never would have and the community is so supportive, I am very happy to be a part of it.
